Cleopatra’s Gallery “No Vacancy” Catalog

Dear Erin,
I would like to propose a structure for catalog. The title “no vacancy” immediately brings to mind apartment buildings and motels, both which have something in common with publications, that is, a group of numbered containers. Can the book folios mimic the placement of numbers on hotel room doors? To complete the metaphor maybe every page is filled, no blank chapter endings etc. It would be interesting to come up with a custom type face for the folios or some kind of revival, although based on the content it may be best to neutralize the typography. Obviously I am not suggesting the catalog mimic the visual language of apartments or motels, just references the structure.
Talk soon,
Sincerely
Peter

WG News & Arts

I have been art directing and designing WG News & Arts, a monthly publication in Brooklyn. While keeping the style conventions of the original designers, my first task from the editorial department was to transition the layout from a broadsheet to a tabloid and in doing so have a bit more fun with the features. This is an ongoing and hopefully evolving project.

I think this was a low run rushed edition printed on crappy paper for a film festival in Italy. Photography by Estevan Oriol & Angela Boatwright, edited by J. Saizarbitoria. The chapters of the book were developed around a quote by one of the Cuban MCs and were censored per chapter to highlight the pertinent theme. The logo was done by a third party for the movie although I would have preferred a more traditional approach to the title / cover treatment.

My main visual reference was the Actuel jazz series but with a much looser type treatment. And both Carlos and I thought it quite democratic to include all the players name on the cover as opposed to hiding them in the liner notes.

One color and split fountain shirts, first in a series based on 80s / 90s dance hall kings with George Estrada. It could be said it is a “limited edish collabo” but I would rather not. We have several S, M, L, and, I think, XL one color versions on American Apparel for sale. Sorry, no split fountains available.

This EP sounds so raw and funky that there was no way it could be not be done by hand, especially without ready access to photos. The illustrations are all done with construction paper on a bed of stickie notes.

My only regret was that we were unable to get proper digital repro due to budgets and a crazy deadline. Currently out of print and hard to come by. Printed shots coming shortly, vinyl collection in storage.
