Hamacide

Yusuke Hama’s new project under his Hamacide moniker that in addition to sounding dangerous also translates to “by the shore”. Since initially the music release is digital only I treated the illustrations by photographing them off the monitor and layering, to emphasize their lifespan as being entirely on screen. Elements of the cover also carry thru to the website and can be expanded upon for future videos, remixes packages, etc.

“Koushik” — MixOBeats & MixORemixes

Sneak screen preview of Koushik’s CD of beats and remixes. Without parroting 20 years of championing remix, tape editing, cut & paste culture I will blatantly admit to sampling all the imagery from The Grammar of Ornament. Thanks to Ben Velez for making this happen.

“Teto Solar” — Tohno Crocco

Brasilian SMD release of Tohno Crocco’s super group of old players. The format is guaranteed at 5 reales and helps combat bootlegs by making the releases affordable. The cover illustration and subsequent treatment of circles within the package mimic stages of a solar eclipse. I think the literal translation of teto solar is a sun roof. Special thanks to Simon Katz for producing this release.

East Dev Music Packaging & Websites

Art direction and design for the first 13 releases of a music imprint I cofounded. My partners and I wanted the packaging to obviously reflect the individual artist projects but also feel like an East Dev release. The lack of realistic budgets also helped dictate the look which often ended up being illustrated.

WG News & Arts Illustrations

Various illustrations for the WG News & Arts. The hearts were rendered with mixed media for a Valentines Day story and the line up of washers was for an essay reviewing local laundromats which compared one Greenpoint washer to an Olafur Eliasson MoMA exhibition.

East Dev illustrations

Some spot illustrations for tshirts and packaging for 2003 East Dev tours and releases. The old portable radios with tape decks were for t-shirts and the guitars for Ahmad Szabo release. Both were done with ink. 

Since the label itself was so associated with electronic music, both my partner and I thought we should emphasize traditional and hand done references as opposed to the then prevalent tech-oriented images.

Archinect Archibots

I initially presented these drawings on Archinect, one of the first well traveled design blogs, even before the word blog was in use. They felt appropriate at the site because of the obvious references the images make to communities, architecture and technology.

Ammon Contact

This EP sounds so raw and funky that there was no way it could be not be done by hand, especially without ready access to photos. The illustrations are all done with construction paper on a bed of stickie notes.

My only regret was that we were unable to get proper digital repro due to budgets and a crazy deadline. Currently out of print and hard to come by. Printed shots coming shortly, vinyl collection in storage.

Hill and Gully Rider

Initially these collages were presented to Arkitip as examples of how one could illustrate with a couple different bitmap patterns. They soon found their way into a Sci-Arc graduate project thanks to I. Kandarian. The bikes were rendered in plaids and floral print shelf lining that provided a nice contrast to the subject matter. The technique is perfect for contemporary retail installations. 

EastDev promo CDs

I detest hate CDs. Ya believe it or not we used to mail these things to people. These were basic promo CDs with space to write on. I wanted to establish this as the house illustration style but it never evolved as such.
