East Dev Music Packaging & Websites

Art direction and design for the first 13 releases of a music imprint I cofounded. My partners and I wanted the packaging to obviously reflect the individual artist projects but also feel like an East Dev release. The lack of realistic budgets also helped dictate the look which often ended up being illustrated.

Eastern Developments Music

Eastern Developments Music was a music imprint started by Guillermo S. Herren and myself at the beginning of the decade. We both were influenced by Atlanta / Miami / NYC — essentially East Coast, hence the name — machine funk. I hesitate to use the word electro, only because of the recent unfortunate hipster connotation. The letter forms themselves were based and traced from an old type house catalog because the specimen looked like a graf piece from the late 80s on the MARTA east line.

The Impossible Image

Design for a Kate Sennert piece in The Blow Up on the issue of digitally manipulated photography. Images were taken from Phaidons book The Impossible Image.

I specifically wanted to avoid the use of Flash, reference Photoshop within the interface and present the photos as big as possible. Looking back I wish the images would have been even larger. View archived site 

VW Radio Posters

914 × 1219 mm poster for Volkswagon’s internet radio startup. Simple, bold and the color scheme says Volkswagen.

Sneakers and Drug Wars

Illustration for David W. era XLR8R for a piece on drug wars and a new book out on the subject. For another article on sneaker fanatics I was asked to illustrate a pair of gravis sneakers. Both illustrations are mixed media, but the sneaker impressed gravis and VW enough to fork over gear and a commission, respectively.

Wade Thompson and I showed some drawing of shoes for no other reason that do some drawings. I have to admit these look better reproduced than actually mounted.
