Cleopatra’s Gallery “No Vacancy” Catalog

Dear Erin,
I would like to propose a structure for catalog. The title “no vacancy” immediately brings to mind apartment buildings and motels, both which have something in common with publications, that is, a group of numbered containers. Can the book folios mimic the placement of numbers on hotel room doors? To complete the metaphor maybe every page is filled, no blank chapter endings etc. It would be interesting to come up with a custom type face for the folios or some kind of revival, although based on the content it may be best to neutralize the typography. Obviously I am not suggesting the catalog mimic the visual language of apartments or motels, just references the structure.

WG News + Arts 2011

Issue 27 introduced a handful of typographic, masthead and editorial tweaks. Helvetica out. Akzidenz in. Hello Albertus. A new table of contents provides a better overview as well as highlighting features. And a masthead simplification. More details to come but thanks Genia for being such a trooper.

I have been art directing and designing WG News & Arts, a monthly publication in Brooklyn. While keeping the style conventions of the original designers, my first task from the editorial department was to transition the layout from a broadsheet to a tabloid and in doing so have a bit more fun with the features. This is an ongoing and hopefully evolving project.

I was never working off mockups but tweaking here and there, which is not my preferred method of designing for the screen. The site was also a convenient place to test web technologies like CSS3, WP plugins and dynamic rendered typography. Now that WordPress 3 has been released, it maybe an appropriate time to revisit the site from scratch, choose not to use WordPress or not have a website at all. Or not worry about the presentation, use Sandbox straight out of the box and concentrate on the content, including additional writing.
