Website mockups for a publishing venture in Brooklyn NY. Although my preference where these, what was eventually coded is ok as well. My first use of Trebuchet MS.

This site initially started as a way to edit WordPress themes, specifically Sandbox, but soon became a database of work I was doing outside of the GHava NY office. I was never working off mockups but tweaking here and there, which is not my preferred method of designing for the screen. The site was also a convenient place to test web technologies like CSS3, WP plugins and dynamic rendered typography. Now that WordPress 3 is out, it maybe a time to revisit the site from scratch, choose not to use WordPress or not have a website at all. Or not worry about the presentation, use Sandbox straight out of the box and concentrate on the content, including additional writing.

This summer I am also interning at the amazingly awesome studio Project Projects to gain more experience in the fields (arts, culture and publishing) and media (print, web, exhibition) I would prefer to work. It is as much a learning as an unlearning experience.

East of Havana — Book

A never-really-released book to accompany the documentary of the same name. I think this was a low run rushed edition printed on crappy paper for a film festival in Italy. Photography by Estevan Oriol & Angela Boatwright, edited by J. Saizarbitoria. The chapters of the book were developed around a quote by one of the Cuban MCs and were censored per chapter to highlight the pertinent theme. The logo was done by a third party for the movie although I would have preferred a more traditional approach to the title / cover treatment.

Hamacide

Yusuke Hama’s new project under his Hamacide moniker that in addition to sounding dangerous also translates to “by the shore”. Since initially the music release is digital only I treated the illustrations by photographing them off the monitor and layering, to emphasize their lifespan as being entirely on screen. Elements of the cover also carry thru to the website and can be expanded upon for future videos, remixes packages, etc.

Cameron Martin website

Cameron’s work is part painting, part photography and part printing making. His palette is often a small range of grey resulting in low contrast images whose impact on the eye vary immensely depending on the ambient light. The WordPress enabled site is super simple with the exception of the “splash” page whose background cycles through a range of grey.

Carlos essentially let me run with this — his only request that it have a private press feel and include a Kev Ramos polaroid on the front. I added Akzidenz Grotesk, the polaroid and a mix of rich and pure black ink.

My main visual reference was the Actuel jazz series but with a much looser type treatment. And both Carlos and I thought it quite democratic to include all the players name on the cover as opposed to hiding them in the liner notes.
